South Korean municipalities expand resource circulation initiatives

Local governments in South Korea are expanding initiatives to promote resource circulation and recycling through technology and community engagement.

In Geoje, two AI-based barrier-free unmanned collection machines for transparent PET bottles have been installed at Aju Stadium. Designed for accessibility, these machines allow wheelchair users and the elderly to participate easily. Using AI and IoT technology, the machines automatically identify recyclable bottles. Users can earn 10 points per bottle, with a daily limit of 20, which can be exchanged for cash through the Superbin application.

Meanwhile, Gwanak-gu has reported increased recycling performance due to rising resident participation. The district's paper pack collection has seen a significant surge, with the first half of this year nearly matching last year's total annual collection. A resource circulation club consisting of 254 members is supporting these efforts by guiding residents on proper waste separation and conducting promotional campaigns. These combined efforts have contributed to a recycling separation rate of 68.7% in the district.
