South Korean municipalities expand waste processing and prevention efforts
Local governments in South Korea are intensifying efforts to strengthen waste management and resource circulation infrastructure.
In Ansan, Mayor Lee Min-geun announced plans to expand the city’s resource recovery facility from a daily capacity of 200 tons to 360 tons. This move aims to stabilize the processing of approximately 526 tons of daily household waste and address the capacity gap at recycling sorting centers, where annual intake currently exceeds processing capabilities by about 5,400 tons. The expansion is a response to changing environmental regulations, including the ban on direct landfilling of household waste in the Seoul metropolitan area.
Meanwhile, the Geomdan-gu Council conducted field inspections at a waste sorting facility in Wanggil-dong to evaluate the handling of illegally dumped waste. Council Chair Kim Nam-won and member Na Seon-hee emphasized a shift from reactive waste collection to proactive prevention. They advocated for environmental policies that focus on identifying the causes of illegal dumping and fostering a culture of proper waste disposal to reduce the administrative burden of cleanup.
