South Korean municipalities issue Chuseok livelihood support funds
Ahead of the Chuseok holiday, various local governments across South Korea are implementing independent livelihood support funds to alleviate the burden of high fuel prices and economic stagnation while stimulating local consumption.
Because these funds are funded by local budgets rather than a centralized government mandate, the amount and availability vary significantly by region. Uiryeong County and Hampyeong County are providing the highest amounts, with 500,000 KRW per resident. Other notable distributions include 350,000 KRW in Tongyeong, 300,000 KRW in Goheung, Jangheung, Buan, Gochang, Wanju, Uljin, and Yeongdong, and 250,000 KRW in Mungyeong.
Most municipalities are distributing these funds via local currency vouchers or prepaid cards to ensure the money is spent at local small businesses and traditional markets. However, some regions, such as Gyeonggi-do, Incheon, Busan, and Jeju, currently have no plans for such payments. In some cases, local councils have blocked the initiatives due to concerns over fiscal responsibility and administrative procedures.
