South Korean National Assembly prepares for contentious audit

South Korea's National Assembly is preparing for a contentious parliamentary audit starting October 6. Major points of conflict between the ruling People Power Party and the opposition Democratic Party include the refusal of Supreme Court Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae to re-nominate a candidate for the Supreme Court, the introduction of single-stock leverage ETFs, and recent North Korean landmine explosions in the DMZ.

The Democratic Party plans to call Chief Justice Cho as a witness to challenge his refusal to re-nominate a justice, arguing that such actions infringe upon the citizens' right to a speedy trial. Conversely, the People Power Party intends to focus its scrutiny on issues such as real estate, the responsibility for leverage ETFs, and potential failures in personnel appointments.

Controversy has also surrounded the Chief Justice's handling of the nomination process. Critics in the National Assembly have questioned the legal clarity of the Supreme Court's interpretation of the Blue House's requests and criticized the communication methods used to convey official stances.
