South Korean National Assembly prepares for intense interpellation sessions

South Korea’s National Assembly is entering a period of intense political confrontation as rival parties prepare for interpellation sessions and confirmation hearings for ministerial nominees. The sessions are scheduled to cover various sectors, including political affairs, foreign affairs, unification, security, economic affairs, and social and cultural affairs.

Ministerial nominee Kim Seung-won is facing significant scrutiny regarding his qualifications. Allegations against him include a past alcohol-related driving fine, questions regarding fund management during his tenure with the Gyeonggi Provincial Party, and concerns involving a cooperative managed by his spouse.

In the upcoming parliamentary sessions, the Democratic Party of Korea is expected to focus on reviewing administration achievements and pushing for economic reform. Conversely, the People Power Party is anticipated to challenge the government on housing prices, fiscal expansion, and the proposed 820.9 trillion won budget for 2027. Security policies, specifically potential military contributions to freedom of navigation efforts in the Strait of Hormuz, are also expected to be a major point of contention.
