South Korean officials release asset disclosures following local elections

The Government Public Service Ethics Committee has released the asset disclosure reports for newly elected officials following the June 3 local elections. The reports cover a wide range of officials, including metropolitan mayors, local heads, and council members.

Notable findings include Choi Ki-young, the Mayor of Bonghwa County, reporting the highest assets among new local heads at approximately 34.9 billion KRW, largely driven by unlisted stocks. In the metropolitan category, Kim Sang-uk, the Mayor of Ulsan, reported approximately 5 billion KRW, the highest among new metropolitan mayors, with a significant portion held in deposits.

Conversely, some officials reported negative net worth due to high debt. Lim Hyun-chul, the Mayor of Nam-gu in Ulsan, reported a negative balance of approximately 17 billion KRW, primarily due to significant liabilities. In Incheon, local council members reported an average asset value of 820 million KRW.

The committee will conduct audits through the end of December to ensure the accuracy of these filings. Any instances of false reporting, significant omissions, or illegal asset formation will result in warnings, fines, or requests for disciplinary action.
