South Korean officials negotiate Seoul housing supply and Yongsan Park development

South Korean government officials and Seoul metropolitan leaders are intensifying discussions to accelerate housing supply in Seoul. Prime Minister Han Seong-sook recently met with heads of 21 Seoul districts to discuss the implementation of the August 13 housing supply measures. The government aims to facilitate approximately 138,000 housing units through various private and public redevelopment projects.

Simultaneously, a key point of contention remains the use of Yongsan Park for housing. Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Kim Yun-deok and Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon are scheduled to meet again this week to resolve disagreements regarding the park. While the central government proposes supplying limited rental housing for youth and newlyweds on certain degraded sections of the park, Mayor Oh has maintained a firm stance against any development within the park boundaries.

As a potential compromise, the Seoul Metropolitan Government has suggested utilizing surrounding sites, such as Camp Kim and various military or diplomatic parking lots, instead of the main park area. However, there are concerns that these alternative sites may not provide sufficient volume to meet the government's supply targets. Discussions are also expected to cover floor area ratio incentives for private reconstruction projects.
