Following a joint field investigation, authorities discovered an additional North Korean plastic anti-personnel mine south of the Military Demarcation Line (MDL). South Korean Defense Minister Kang Shin-chul stated that the government would consider appropriate measures if North Korean responsibility is formally confirmed, noting that the mines were likely planted during Pyongyang's recent border fortification activities.

North Korea has vehemently denied any involvement, with Kim Yo Jong describing the investigation as a “conspiratorial farce” and accusing Seoul of staging the event to create a pretext for military provocation. Kim warned of “immediate and merciless” retaliation if South Korean forces fire upon North Korean troops engaged in border work. The dispute has heightened tensions along the heavily fortified border as both nations remain in a technical state of war.
