South Korean parties clash over constitutional amendment proposals
South Korea's political landscape is facing a deadlock over proposed constitutional amendments. The Democratic Party of Korea has launched a constitutional amendment task force with the goal of holding a national referendum by the first half of next year. This move follows President Lee Jae-myung's recent statement that he has no intention of seeking re-election.
In contrast, the ruling People Power Party has firmly rejected any discussions regarding constitutional changes during the current administration. Party leadership has expressed skepticism regarding the President's intentions and characterized the Democratic Party's push as an attempt to divert attention from governance issues or to trigger internal party conflicts. The People Power Party maintains that it will not participate in discussions with forces it deems to be operating unconstitutionally.
