South Korean pediatric hospitals protest specimen test fee cuts

The Korean Pediatric and Adolescent Hospital Association is protesting a government decision to reduce specimen test fees, such as blood tests, by an average of 28% starting in January. The association argues that the uniform reduction fails to account for the unique medical requirements of pediatric patients compared to adults.

According to the association, pediatric blood collection is more complex due to smaller blood volumes, thinner veins, and the need for multiple medical staff to stabilize children during the procedure. They noted that while an adult may only require one nurse, pediatric procedures often require at least two staff members to ensure safety and manage patient anxiety.

The association is calling for a separate compensation system, including a “pediatric specimen collection surcharge,” to reflect the difficulty and additional labor involved. They warned that if fees do not cover actual costs, hospitals may reduce staffing or outsource testing, potentially leading to delayed results and increased physical distress for children due to repeated needle sticks.
