South Korean police: 209 officers indicted for job-related crimes over five years
Between 2021 and July 2024, 209 police officers in South Korea were indicted for crimes related to their official duties, including leaking investigation information, falsifying public records, and evidence destruction. Data provided by the National Police Agency to lawmaker Park Sang-woong reveals that the most frequent charge was the leakage of official secrets, involving 70 officers.
Other significant charges included violations of the Personal Information Protection Act (32 officers) and the falsification of official documents (31 officers). While 112 officers received heavy disciplinary measures such as dismissal or suspension, approximately 29.7% of those indicted received only light disciplinary actions, such as reprimands or warnings.
Lawmaker Park Sang-woong called for a comprehensive review of disciplinary standards and review procedures to ensure that criminal investigations and internal disciplinary actions are properly aligned. In response to recent misconduct and poor investigation quality, acting commissioner Kim Jong-cheol has ordered improvements to the agency's internal control systems and investigative capabilities.
