South Korean police express concern over investigation reforms

South Korean police officers are expressing significant concern regarding proposed reforms by the Police Investigation Reform Committee aimed at strengthening internal inspections. The National Police Workplace Association conducted a survey of 6,063 officers, finding that 86.5% believe intensified inspections could stifle law enforcement activities on the ground.

Critics argue that increasing inspection personnel at local stations may allow high-ranking officials appointed by the executive branch to exert undue influence, potentially compromising political neutrality. Some veteran officers noted that inspections often target investigations that deviate from government policy rather than focusing solely on corruption.

Separately, questions are being raised regarding the investigative capabilities of the police. Following a recent failure to identify the original creators of a fraudulent opinion poll video during a local election, concerns have surfaced about whether the police possess the necessary digital forensic and technical expertise to handle complex modern crimes effectively.
