South Korean police face rising prisoner transfer burdens and agricultural theft
Recent data from the National Police Agency reveals significant operational and criminal challenges facing South Korean law enforcement. In Gyeongbuk, the implementation of regional detention centers has led to a surge in long-distance prisoner transfers. Over the past five years, the Gyeongbuk Police Agency recorded 2,395 instances of transferring suspects distances exceeding 20km, the highest in the country. This trend forces investigators to personally escort suspects over long distances, creating gaps in investigative capacity.
Separately, theft targeting agricultural, fishery, and livestock products has seen a sharp increase. The total damage from such thefts reached approximately 15.4 billion won last year, more than doubling from the previous year. Despite the rising financial impact, the arrest rate for these crimes remains below 50%, at 48.6%. Lawmakers have called for enhanced patrol measures, nationwide special crackdowns during harvest seasons, and expanded surveillance infrastructure to protect rural livelihoods.
