Jeju Island police scandal erupts over falsified missing person reports
A major police scandal has emerged on Jeju Island, South Korea, following the discovery of several bodies of individuals previously reported missing. The investigation centers on a police officer, identified by the surname Bu, who is accused of falsifying documents and prematurely closing missing person cases without verifying the safety of the individuals.
In one prominent case, 37-year-old Jang Mi-ran was found dead near her residence 104 days after her disappearance. Officer Bu allegedly misled the victim's family by claiming he had spoken to her on the phone, despite no such record existing. Another case involving a 60-year-old man was similarly closed under false pretenses; his body was also recently recovered on the island.
The scandal has triggered widespread public distrust and prompted high-level government intervention. President Lee Jae Myung has instructed the prime minister to explore police reforms. Meanwhile, Jeju Governor Wi Seong-gon has pledged to implement new safety manuals, expand CCTV coverage, and increase patrols to prevent future negligence. Police are currently investigating all 298 missing person reports handled by Officer Bu since last year.
