South Korean Police to implement new system after 117 family-related cases found
A nationwide investigation by the South Korean National Police Agency has identified 117 cases involving the families of active-duty police officers. Of these, 45 cases involve family members as suspects or persons of interest, while 72 involve family members acting as victims, complainants, or petitioners.
The investigation revealed a systemic lack of oversight, as the police previously maintained no separate tracking system for incidents involving officers' relatives. This allowed cases to be handled by local stations without organizational awareness unless an officer voluntarily requested recusal. Historically, official recusal requests have been minimal, with only 77 instances recorded over the past six and a half years.
