KOSPI enters bull market on semiconductor and AI demand surge

South Korea’s KOSPI index has entered a technical bull market, rising approximately 22% to 23% from its July lows. This recovery has been driven primarily by a surge in semiconductor stocks, including industry leaders Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, as well as a global rebound in AI-related hardware demand.

In July 2026, South Korean semiconductor exports reached $41 billion, marking a 178.8% year-on-year increase and continuing a 17-month growth streak. Notably, SSD exports surged by 500.2% during the same period. The ICT sector reported a trade surplus of $35.1 billion for July, supported by high demand for server memory and enterprise SSDs driven by AI infrastructure expansion.

Market volatility remains a factor, following a significant crash in mid-2026 where the KOSPI saw rapid peak-to-trough fluctuations. However, recent momentum has been bolstered by positive US economic indicators, such as lower-than-expected PPI, and bullish outlooks from major chipmakers like Sandisk.
