South Korean political figures address legal rulings and medical crisis
Han Dong-hoon, an independent lawmaker, has criticized the recent appellate court ruling against former President Yoon Suk-yeol. The Seoul High Court upheld a sentence of 1 year and 6 months in prison with a 3-year stay of execution for Yoon regarding violations of the Public Official Election Act. Han argued that based on the legal precedents used in Yoon’s case, President Lee Jae-myung would also face a sentence that invalidates his election, emphasizing that no individual should be above the law.
Separately, lawmaker Ahn Cheol-soo addressed the controversy surrounding the police search and seizure at Ajou University Hospital’s pediatric emergency center. The investigation follows the death of a four-month-old infant, leading to allegations of medical malpractice. The incident has caused significant tension in the medical community, with seven out of nine specialists at the center expressing intent to resign. Ahn proposed strengthening the “Good Samaritan Law” and pursuing an “Emergency Room Protection Act” to limit forced investigations in essential medical settings to prevent disruptions to patient care.
