South Korean political parties clash over Supreme Court Chief Justice's refusal

South Korean political parties are engaged in a fierce confrontation following Supreme Court Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae’s refusal to accept the presidential administration’s request to re-nominate a Supreme Court justice candidate. The dispute centers on the administration's claim that the initial nomination lacked procedural completeness, a reasoning Chief Justice Cho has rejected.

The Democratic Party has accused Chief Justice Cho of collaborating with external political forces and undermining the judiciary. Party officials have suggested that Cho is following a path of institutional collapse and have discussed measures including impeachment, parliamentary investigations, and budget cuts for the Supreme Court. Some members have even called for the abolition of the Court Administration.

In response, the People Power Party has condemned these actions as an attempt to seize control of the judiciary and destroy the separation of powers. They argue that labeling the Chief Justice’s refusal as “insurrectionary” or “rebellion” is an attempt to intimidate constitutional institutions that do not align with the administration's wishes. The ruling party warned that such pressure threatens the rule of law in South Korea.
