South Korean political parties debate housing supply and tax policies

Seven South Korean political parties participated in a policy debate hosted by the Central Election Broadcasting Debate Committee to address housing supply shortages and stabilizing home prices. The debate highlighted sharp ideological divides regarding the role of the state versus the private sector in real estate development.

The People Power Party advocated for private-sector-led high-density development, particularly near subway stations, arguing that excessive government intervention disrupts the market. In contrast, the Democratic Party of Korea emphasized the need for public-led supply to act as a catalyst for private sector activity, citing a recent drop in housing supply volumes.

Disagreements also extended to taxation. The People Power Party criticized current real estate tax policies as being punitive toward homeowners, while the Democratic Party defended them as a necessary normalization of taxes based on the ability to pay. Other participants, including the Rebuilding Korea Party, suggested utilizing government land for high-quality public rental housing to assist youth and non-homeowners.
