South Korean political tension rises over ROK-US alliance status

South Korean Unification Minister Chung Dong-young and the opposition People Power Party are engaged in a sharp dispute regarding the state of the alliance between South Korea and the United States.

Minister Chung defended the recent summit between President Lee Jae-myung and U.S. President Donald Trump, describing it as a historic milestone for national interest and autonomy. He dismissed claims that the alliance is being undermined, noting that navigating security and trade tensions is a standard practice for all U.S. allies. Regarding recent landmine explosions in the DMZ, Chung called for bipartisan cooperation to prevent future incidents.

Conversely, the People Power Party has demanded the immediate dismissal of Minister Chung and National Intelligence Service Director Lee Jong-seok. Opposition leaders Jang Dong-hyuk and Jeong Jeom-sik accused the administration of causing an alliance breakdown, alleging that Chung has leaked secrets and adopted pro-North Korean stances. The opposition further criticized the government's diplomatic handling of Ukraine and its perceived alignment with North Korea, China, and Russia.
