South Korean President Lee and Han Dong-hoon clash over multicultural policies

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung and lawmaker Han Dong-hoon are engaged in a political dispute regarding support policies for multicultural families. The controversy began after President Lee shared a post from an online community questioning whether certain preferential treatments, such as priority access to public postpartum care centers or extra points for daycare enrollment, are necessary or constitute reverse discrimination.

President Lee has addressed the issue on social media for four consecutive days, stating that while support for multicultural families is necessary, it should not justify irrational policies that cause reverse discrimination. He emphasized the need for public debate and the correction of flawed specific policies to maintain broader support for social welfare.

In response, Han Dong-hoon criticized the President's method of governance, arguing that posting unverified community content on social media creates "noise" rather than communication. While Han acknowledged that the claim regarding excessive benefits for multicultural families has merit, he argued that the President should have directed relevant government departments to review the policies formally instead of making impulsive social media posts. Han also noted that many individuals in multicultural families are naturalized citizens and should be distinguished from foreign national policies.
