South Korea President Lee Jae Myung affected by major data leak

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and 167 other individuals, including the First Lady, cabinet ministers, security personnel, and journalists, have had their sensitive personal information exposed online for approximately five months.

The leaked data, which includes names, dates of birth, passport numbers, and passport validity details, was contained in an Excel file titled “Passenger List (Republic of Korea-Belgium)”. The file was reportedly uploaded to VirusTotal, a paid cybersecurity platform used for malware scanning, around June 2, prior to the President’s official visit to Europe.

The South Korean government currently views the incident as an internal data leak rather than a cyberattack. Authorities are investigating whether the exposure occurred due to an employee uploading the file for a malware check without realizing the platform shares data with external security partners and paid subscribers.

In response, the Blue House held an emergency meeting led by Presidential Chief of Staff Lim Kwang-hyun, who described the breach as a serious matter requiring a thorough investigation into management responsibilities. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is coordinating with police to determine the exact cause and is currently reissuing passports for all affected individuals to mitigate security risks.
