South Korea manager Hong Myung-bo quits following early World Cup elimination
South Korea were eliminated in the group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after finishing third in Group A with a 2‑1 win over the Czech Republic and 1‑0 defeats to Mexico and South Africa. The result left the team outside the eight best third‑placed sides and ended its campaign.
Head coach Hong Myung‑bo announced his resignation the day after the exit, taking full responsibility and apologising to fans. President Lee Jae‑myung publicly condemned the performance, labeling it a failure of organisation and personnel, and demanded a thorough investigation by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism into the causes of the defeat and the selection process for the coach.
The early exit has sparked widespread anger among supporters, former players and officials, with calls for an overhaul of the Korea Football Association's leadership and the removal of long‑time president Chung Mong‑gyu. The controversy highlights concerns over perceived cronyism and mismanagement within South Korean football.
