South Korea‑Chile summit critical mineral memorandum FTA modernisation UN Ocean Conference 2028 cultural exchange

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung visited Chile on 30 July, meeting his counterpart President José Antonio Kast at the Palacio de La Moneda in Santiago. The leaders signed five memoranda of understanding covering cooperation on critical minerals, public security, maritime security, Antarctic research and investment promotion. They also agreed to modernise the 2004 free‑trade agreement and reactivate a joint FTA committee, and pledged to co‑host the 2028 United Nations Ocean Conference.

Lee stressed that the two countries can create significant synergy in critical‑mineral supply chains, the defence industry and advanced manufacturing, noting Chile’s status as the world’s largest copper producer and second‑largest lithium reserve holder. Bilateral trade last year reached US$6.991 billion. A business round‑table in Santiago brought together executives from more than 20 firms to discuss joint projects in mining, digital technology, green energy and defence.

In parallel, Korean First Lady Kim Hea Kyung toured Santiago’s Pre‑Columbian Art Museum, describing the experience as “like traveling back 3,000 years”. Cultural exchanges also included gift‑giving between the leaders and their spouses, featuring Korean cosmetics, Chilean wine and traditional crafts.
