South Korean President Lee rejects troop deployment to Strait of Hormuz

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has stated that the nation will not deploy military forces to the Strait of Hormuz in a manner that would involve South Korea in the ongoing conflict involving Iran.

Addressing requests for cooperation from U.S. President Donald Trump, Lee clarified during a press conference that any deployment intended to lead to direct involvement in war is off the table. However, the South Korean government is considering expanding its role in maintaining maritime security in the region. This may include strengthening existing naval units, such as those currently operating off the coast of Somalia for anti-piracy missions, to show consideration for international security needs without direct combat involvement.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical global corridor for crude oil, petroleum products, and liquefied natural gas, but shipping has faced significant disruptions due to the escalation of regional conflicts.
