South Korea and Egypt upgrade ties to strategic partnership
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi have elevated bilateral relations to a ‘strategic partnership’ during a state visit to Seoul. A central outcome of the summit is the formal launch of negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which aims to provide a robust institutional framework for trade and investment.
The two leaders signed or renewed 12 memorandums of understanding covering diverse sectors, including shipbuilding, clean energy, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and ICT. In the defense sector, the leaders identified the joint production of K-9 self-propelled howitzers as a successful model for military-industrial cooperation.
To facilitate business and labor mobility, the nations also signed a social security agreement to mitigate double pension payments for workers. Cultural ties will be strengthened through the designation of 2027 as the ‘Year of Korea-Egypt Cultural Exchange.’ Additionally, the leaders discussed regional stability in the Middle East and the Korean Peninsula, emphasizing the importance of international maritime security.
