South Korean public agencies win innovation awards for ESG and housing models

South Korean local public institutions have received top honors at the 2026 Local Public Institution Innovation Excellence Awards hosted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the Local Public Enterprise Evaluation Institute.

Incheon Facilities Corporation won the Grand Prize for its ESG-focused green park management. The initiative, titled ‘Green Parks Environmentally Friendly to E’, implemented specialized environmental strategies across Yeongjong, Cheongna, and Songdo parks. Key achievements included creating blue carbon habitats, improving drainage in green zones, and recycling waste, resulting in approximately 200 million won in budget savings and a reduction of 180 tons of carbon emissions.

Gyeonggi Housing & Urban Development Corporation (GH) received the Excellence Award in the regional coexistence and cooperation category. GH was recognized for developing South Korea’s first equity-accumulation housing model, designed to lower the initial financial burden for young people and newlyweds. Under this model, residents acquire 10% to 25% of the property's equity upon move-in and purchase the remaining shares over 20 to 30 years. This model has since been integrated into national housing policy, with the first units scheduled for construction in Suwon Gwanggyo.
