South Korean regional marine tourism and environmental education initiatives
In South Korea, regional initiatives are focusing on marine-based economic and educational development. The Tongyeong City Council recently held a lecture featuring Professor Ko Kye-seong from Kyungnam University to discuss strategies for transforming Tongyeong into a complex marine leisure tourism city. The discussion centered on integrating local cultural assets with marine leisure infrastructure and connecting maritime hubs like the Donam and Dosan districts with the old city center.
Separately, the Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation (KOEM) has entered into a partnership with Chonnam National University's Yeosu Campus. This collaboration aims to revitalize marine environmental education in the Jeonnam region by training professional instructors who utilize local islands and marine resources. The program is designed to create local jobs by training residents, including youth and seniors, to serve as educators for various age groups, thereby fostering environmental awareness and regional growth.
