South Korean regional offices expand community-based student support

Local governments and educational offices in South Korea are expanding community-based support systems for students. In Daejeon, the Metropolitan Office of Education, the city, and five autonomous districts are implementing the ‘Daejeon Happy Connection Education District’ project. This initiative connects local resources with school curricula through 65 different programs, involving over 16,000 students in activities such as village-linked curricula and career experience programs.

In Daegu, the Metropolitan Office of Education has entered into a memorandum of understanding with 12 regional institutions, including the Daegu Metropolitan Police Agency, university hospitals, social welfare organizations, and NGOs like Good Neighbors and Save the Children. This partnership aims to create an integrated support system to address complex student needs involving economic, psychological, emotional, and family issues. The collaboration focuses on moving away from fragmented assistance toward a student-centered model that provides timely, holistic support through a coordinated public-private network.
