South Korean regions begin first 2026 rice harvests

Agricultural regions in South Korea have commenced their first rice harvests of 2026 using early-maturing varieties.

In Gimpo City, the first harvest took place in Dong-eulsan-ri, Tongjin-eup. Utilizing a variety developed in Chungcheong Province, farmers harvested the crop just three months after transplanting on May 10. This early harvest, occurring in mid-August, suggests the potential for double-cropping in the region. Shin Gimpo Nonghyup reported an expected yield of 3.7 tons from a 1,500-pyeong cultivation area.

In Gyeongju City, the first harvest was held in Seo-ak-dong, led by the Gyeongju Nonghyup Special Rice Growers Association. The harvest focused on ‘Haedambyeo’, an early-maturing variety known for its resistance to diseases like blast and its high taste quality. The variety was harvested approximately four months after being planted on April 21. Local authorities provided 40 million won in support for seeds, fertilizer, and farming materials to ensure stable production and early shipment of new rice.
