South Korean regions expand RE100 renewable energy initiatives

Regional initiatives in South Korea are expanding the adoption of RE100 (100% renewable energy) standards through various sectors and infrastructure projects.

In Jeju Province, the RE100 certification has expanded to include Hanwoo (Korean beef) farms. This brings the total number of RE100-certified livestock operations in the region to 10, including poultry, dairy, and meat processing facilities. These farms utilize methods such as purchasing Green Premiums from the Korea Electric Power Corporation to reduce carbon emissions in production. Jeju is also providing support for self-consumption solar power facilities to ensure long-term energy independence for these farms.

Meanwhile, Pohang is launching a project to install solar power facilities in public parking lots measuring over 1,000 square meters. Starting next year, the city plans to invest approximately 20 billion won in private capital to develop 30 sites with a total capacity of 10 MW. This initiative aims to support local companies in achieving RE100 goals through Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) while utilizing existing urban spaces to minimize inconvenience to citizens.
