South Korean regions push for public healthcare and medical school relocations

Efforts are intensifying across South Korea to relocate public healthcare institutions and establish medical education facilities to address regional disparities and bolster local industries.

In Daegu, Dong-gu officials are campaigning to attract the Korea Health Personnel Licensing Examination Institute and the National Institute of Dental Research. The goal is to integrate these institutions into the existing Daegu-Gyeongbuk Advanced Medical Complex to create a complete healthcare ecosystem spanning R&D, testing, and industrialization. Local leaders emphasize that the region's existing infrastructure, including the K-MEDI Hub and various medical R&D centers, provides a ready-made environment for these agencies.

Simultaneously, in the Jeonbuk region, lawmaker Park Hee-seung is advocating for the establishment of a national medical school in Namwon. Park argues that securing Namwon as the site for the national medical school, alongside the potential relocation of the National Medical Center, is essential for strengthening public healthcare and resolving the medical vacuum in rural areas. This initiative aims to ensure that public medical personnel are trained to serve in essential healthcare sectors within local communities.
