South Korean researchers develop hair follicle regeneration technology
A research team from Chung-Ang University Hospital and Yonsei University has developed a new hair follicle regeneration technology using self-healing hydrogels. This modular artificial skin technology aims to overcome the limitations of existing tissue engineering, which struggles to replicate the complex 3D structures and cellular interactions required for hair follicle formation.
The researchers designed a hydrogel with a mechanical strength of approximately 32kPa, suitable for hair follicle formation. By creating independent hydrogel modules containing different cell types and allowing them to fuse through self-healing properties, the team successfully mimicked the dual-layer structure of the epidermis and dermis. This structure promotes cell-to-cell interaction and strengthens hair follicle formation signals.
In animal experiments, the transplantation of these dual-layer structures not only accelerated wound healing but also successfully induced ‘de novo hair follicle regeneration’. The study also demonstrated that the technology can accurately replicate pharmacological responses to existing hair loss treatments. The findings were published in the journal ‘Advanced Healthcare Materials’ on September 14.
