South Korean researchers develop IoT-enabled wireless brain implant
Researchers from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and Yonsei University have developed a miniaturized, wireless neural implant capable of Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity.
The device integrates several functions into a single unit, including drug administration via a programmable electrochemical pump, optical stimulation using a microLED probe, and wireless communication. This architecture allows for the remote management of neural activity through a computer or smartphone.
In a successful intercontinental demonstration, a researcher in Chicago, United States, remotely controlled the implant in real-time on a rat located in Daejeon, South Korea. The experiment, conducted over a distance of more than 10,000 kilometers, showed that communication latency remained low enough to permit immediate control.
