South Korean Researchers Develop Spray-On Coating to Extend Air Filter Life
Researchers led by Sanghyuk Wooh of Chung‑Ang University and Chae Bin Kim of Pusan National University have created a spray‑on material called Dynamic Imine Bond Adhesive (DIBA) that dramatically improves the performance of commercial air filters. The coating continuously renews its surface, allowing trapped particles to embed more securely and increasing the holding force by nearly 70 times. Laboratory tests showed filtration efficiency gains of 10 % to 30 % and an upgrade of filter ratings from MERV 6 to MERV 11, effectively doubling the usable lifespan of the filters.
The coating can be applied with a simple spray process to existing filter products without altering manufacturing methods, offering a practical route to cleaner indoor air in homes, offices, hospitals, factories and vehicles. The findings were published in the journal Advanced Materials.
