South Korean retail investors flee to U.S. markets amid KOSPI rout
South Korean retail investors, colloquially known as "ants," are shifting capital toward the U.S. market following a significant downturn in the domestic KOSPI index. In July, retail buying of U.S. equities reached $4.6 billion, significantly exceeding the $2.7 billion monthly average seen earlier in the year. This reversal of recent trends where money flowed into the KOSPI has undermined government efforts to incentivize domestic investment through tax breaks and corporate governance reforms.
The KOSPI's decline has been driven largely by a massive loss in market value among semiconductor giants Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, which accounted for 76% of the index's total wipeout. Concerns regarding the sustainability of AI-related spending and increased competition from China have contributed to the selloff.
Concurrently, South Korean financial authorities have implemented stricter regulations on single-stock leveraged ETFs to curb market volatility. These measures include increasing the required cash deposit for new investors from 10 million won to 30 million won. While these regulations have led to a nearly 90% drop in the trading volume of specific single-stock leveraged products, analysts note a "balloon effect" where capital is instead migrating toward broader semiconductor sector leveraged ETFs and overseas high-risk products.
