South Korean ruling and opposition parties agree to appoint Special Inspector General
South Korea's ruling and opposition parties have reached an agreement to adopt the personnel hearing report for Choi Gil-soo, the nominee for Special Inspector General. This decision is expected to end a decade-long vacancy in the position, which has remained unfilled since 2016 following controversies regarding the scope of investigations into presidential aides.
The report will be adopted with both favorable and unfavorable opinions recorded. The Special Inspector General is an independent body designed to prevent corruption among the President's relatives and high-ranking officials, including those at the level of senior presidential secretaries.
Despite the agreement on the report, political friction remains regarding the scope of the inspector's authority. The opposition has called for investigations into potential illegal solicitation and personnel interference during the previous administration, while the ruling party has raised questions regarding the necessity of investigating certain presidential staff and the President's family members. The successful implementation of the role will depend on the nominee's ability to maintain political neutrality and independence from executive pressure.
