South Korean schools face legal rulings on student misconduct

South Korean courts and educational authorities are addressing recent incidents of student misconduct in elementary schools.

A Cheongju District Court recently upheld a school violence disciplinary measure against a male student who attempted to kiss a female classmate. Although the student claimed the act was a joke without intent to harm, the court ruled that the student's actions caused the classmate to hit a metal pillar, resulting in injury. The court determined that even without direct intent to cause injury, the behavior could be recognized as school violence if it causes physical or mental distress.

In a separate incident in Cheongju, a fifth-grade student was ordered to transfer schools after physically assaulting a teacher. Video footage showed the student kicking and striking the teacher, including grabbing her hair. This transfer is the highest level of disciplinary action available for elementary students. However, the student's parents have filed police complaints against the teacher and school administrators, alleging child abuse during the confrontation.
