South Korean schools tighten smart device rules amid medical use debate

Schools in South Korea are implementing stricter regulations regarding the use of smart devices during class to improve learning environments and protect educational activities. In Chungcheongbuk-do, 471 elementary, middle, and high schools have updated their student life regulations to include specific guidelines on device storage, criteria for exceptional use, and disciplinary measures for violations.

While the principle restricts device use during lessons, exceptions are permitted for students with disabilities, educational purposes, or emergencies. In a related legislative development, Representative Lee So-hee has proposed an amendment to the Elementary and Secondary Education Act to further protect students' rights to medical monitoring. The proposed law would allow students who require smart devices for medical treatment or health monitoring—such as those with Type 1 diabetes using continuous glucose monitors—to use these devices during class without requiring explicit teacher permission, ensuring they can manage critical health conditions without delay.
