South Korean markets react to AI component demand and US tech strength

South Korean equity markets showed mixed performance as investors reacted to global technology trends and domestic corporate developments. The KOSPI fluctuated around the 7,000 level, supported by institutional buying despite significant net selling by foreign investors. Meanwhile, the KOSDAQ exhibited stronger momentum, driven by gains in small-to-mid-cap stocks, particularly in the biotechnology and semiconductor sectors.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics emerged as a key performer, seeing stock price increases driven by rising demand for AI-related components. The company recently secured a 290 billion won contract to supply AI server-grade Multi-Layer Ceramic Capacitors (MLCC) and announced a massive 4.27 trillion won investment to expand FC-BGA production facilities at its Sejong plant through 2028. This move aims to meet the growing demand for high-performance substrates used in AI computing.

Broader market sentiment was influenced by record highs in the US Nasdaq and strength in Nvidia, which bolstered interest in Korean semiconductor stocks. Investors are also closely monitoring upcoming third-quarter preliminary earnings from Samsung Electronics and potential shifts in US monetary policy and interest rates.
