South Korean semiconductor talent program faces delays and funding concerns

During a National Assembly Education Committee audit, lawmakers criticized the South Korean government’s 266.5 billion won initiative to train 150,000 semiconductor professionals due to significant infrastructure delays and administrative failures.

While the government aims to bolster the semiconductor industry, key regional national universities are struggling to establish essential research facilities. Chonnam National University has seen its research center construction delayed until 2027 due to site changes and failed design bids. Meanwhile, Chungnam National University has faced criticism for enrolling semiconductor students before completing the necessary laboratories, forcing students to use equipment from other departments.

Separately, regional education superintendents expressed concerns regarding proposed reforms to local education financial grants. Officials from the Chungcheong and Honam regions warned that reducing grants based on declining student populations could jeopardize essential fixed costs, such as teacher salaries, school operations, and facility maintenance, particularly in rural and island areas. Lawmakers urged education authorities to provide more concrete, data-driven evidence to justify their funding requirements to the government.
