South Korean shipbuilders report strong Q3 operating profits
South Korea’s three major shipbuilders—HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, Samsung Heavy Industries, and Hanwha Ocean—reported significant increases in third-quarter operating profits compared to the previous year. The combined operating profit for the trio reached 2.27 trillion won, driven by a strategic shift toward high-value vessels such as Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) carriers and container ships.
HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering recorded an operating profit of 1.44 trillion won, a 37.3% increase year-on-year. Despite this growth, some analysts lowered target stock prices due to market adjustments. Samsung Heavy Industries reported 338.4 billion won, while Hanwha Ocean saw a 67.6% increase to 485.7 billion won.
The industry is benefiting from the transition away from low-margin vessels toward high-profit, eco-friendly technologies. While factors such as reduced working days during holidays and currency fluctuations impacted some quarterly revenue, the long-term outlook remains positive due to sustained demand for LNG and specialized vessels.
