South Korean singer sentenced to 25 years for daughter's murder
A South Korean court has sentenced a singer and YouTuber in her 40s to 25 years in prison for the murder of her 18-year-old daughter. The Changwon District Court Jinju Branch delivered the verdict on the 8th.
According to prosecutors, the incident occurred in September last year in Namhae County, South Gyeongsang Province. The defendant allegedly assaulted her daughter with wooden clubs because she felt “embarrassed” by her, causing scalp lacerations. The defendant also poured hot water on the victim, resulting in burns covering approximately 27% of her body.
Despite the victim experiencing breathing difficulties, the defendant failed to seek medical attention and instead left the daughter abandoned in a vehicle for more than two days. The crime was discovered when the defendant eventually brought the daughter to a hospital emergency room, where medical staff noticed the injuries and alerted the police. The victim was already deceased upon arrival.
While the prosecution sought the death penalty, citing a lack of remorse and a high risk of recidivism, the court noted that the crime did not appear to be meticulously premeditated. However, the judge criticized the defendant for attempting to evade responsibility and failing to provide necessary medical care.
