South Korean stock markets face volatility amid U.S. rate concerns
South Korean stock markets showed mixed performance on the 17th, facing pressure from hawkish signals from the U.S. Federal Reserve and rising interest rates. The KOSPI index fluctuated near the 6,720 level, struggling to maintain momentum after an initial rise toward 6,795. While individual investors and other corporations provided buying support, foreign investors continued a seven-day selling streak, net selling approximately 759.6 billion won.
In the semiconductor sector, major stocks such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix experienced declines. Conversely, banking and heavy equipment sectors saw gains, with companies like KB Financial and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries rising.
The KOSDAQ index also opened higher, trading around the 819-820 range. Despite the downward pressure from U.S. market trends and exchange rate volatility, individual and institutional investors supported the index through net purchases. While some stocks reached their upper price limits, others in the technology and battery sectors saw declines.
