South Korean stocks open lower despite Wall Street gains

South Korean stocks opened lower on Monday, with the benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) falling 40.16 points, or 0.47 percent, to 7,040.76 by 9:15 a.m. This decline occurred despite recent gains on Wall Street, where the Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500, and Nasdaq Composite all ended higher on the previous Friday.

Market movement was influenced by falling oil prices, as Brent crude settled around $104 a barrel following reports that Iran proposed a plan to end conflict. In the local market, major companies saw mixed results: Samsung Electronics dropped 1.14 percent and SK hynix fell 2.63 percent, while Samsung Electro-Mechanics rose 4.31 percent. The Korean won traded at 1,357.1 against the U.S. dollar.
