South Korean student sentenced for ISIS allegiance and terror planning

A college student in South Korea has been sentenced to a prison term of between one and one and a half years for violating the Counter-Terrorism Act. The Cheongju District Court issued the indeterminate sentence to an 18-year-old male who had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (ISIS) and attempted to join the group as a foreign fighter.

Investigations revealed that the individual accessed ISIS propaganda websites over 8,600 times between November 2024 and September of the following year. He used encrypted online platforms to communicate with supporters, posted messages of loyalty to leaders, and inquired about methods to enter Syria. Furthermore, he obtained instructional materials regarding the manufacture of explosives and drone-based explosive devices through one-on-one communications with suspected organization members.

The court noted that the defendant's actions were not impulsive but rather demonstrated a high degree of continuity and repetition. However, the judge cited the defendant's age, his lack of prior criminal record, and his expression of remorse as mitigating factors in determining the sentence.
