South Korean Students Detained After Unauthorized Entry into Osan Air Base

Eight members of the Korean Progressive University Student Union – four men and four women – attempted to breach Osan Air Base, a United States Seventh Air Force installation located about 60 km south of Seoul. The activists shouted anti‑U.S. slogans as they approached the main gate. U.S. Forces Korea personnel stopped the protesters, detained them on the base and later handed them over to South Korean police, who placed the students under investigation for violating the law that protects military installations.

The protest was linked to the group’s opposition to a planned semiconductor manufacturing project and broader concerns about U.S. military facilities in South Korea. No injuries or security incidents were reported. South Korean authorities noted the presence of roughly 28,500 U.S. troops on the peninsula and emphasized that unauthorized entry into such sites is taken "extremely seriously" by both nations.
