South Korean Supreme Court issues additional arrest warrant for Kim Keon Hee

The South Korean Supreme Court has issued an additional arrest warrant for former first lady Kim Keon Hee, extending her detention for two months. The court cited concerns regarding the risk of flight and the destruction of evidence as the primary reasons for the decision.

The new warrant follows a hearing held on Tuesday, during which Kim participated via video link from the Seoul Nambu Detention Center. Her legal team argued against the extension, claiming it was an improper attempt to bypass detention limits through a separate case and noting that Kim’s health has significantly deteriorated. Kim herself reportedly appealed for release to receive medical treatment.

Kim is currently facing two separate legal proceedings at the Supreme Court. One involves corruption charges related to the Deutsche Motors stock manipulation and other allegations, for which she received a four-year prison sentence in an appellate court. The second case involves bribery-related charges, specifically regarding the receipt of luxury goods in exchange for mediation and influence, for which she was sentenced to five years in an appellate court. The special counsel team requested the additional warrant to ensure she remains in custody until a final verdict is reached in these ongoing trials.
