South Korean teachers face rising legal challenges from parents

Teachers in South Korea are facing increasing legal challenges from parents, sparking concerns over the erosion of educational authority and the chilling effect on classroom activities.

In Seoul, a parent has filed criminal charges against a part-time teacher for professional negligence following an injury sustained by a student during a beanbag-tossing activity two years ago. The student suffered a patellar dislocation, while the teacher maintains the incident was an unpredictable accident occurring during a standard, encouraged school activity.

Simultaneously, in Chungbuk, teacher organizations have condemned what they describe as “retaliatory” child abuse reports. This follows an incident where a student physically assaulted a teacher and school administrators, only for the student's parents to subsequently sue the staff for child abuse.

Teacher unions are calling for legislative reforms to the Child Welfare Act and the Child Abuse Punishment Act. They are advocating for systems that prevent the misuse of child abuse laws to pressure educators and are demanding state responsibility for legal battles arising from legitimate educational guidance.
