South Korean telecom carriers launch campaign to prevent mobile ID forgery

South Korea's three major mobile carriers—SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus—have launched a joint public interest campaign titled ‘QR Once, Double the Peace of Mind!’ to combat the rising use of forged mobile identification.

The campaign, which runs until October 5, aims to shift user behavior from simply ‘showing’ a mobile ID screen to ‘verifying’ it using the QR code function within the PASS authentication platform. This move addresses increasing instances of identity fraud involving fake apps and synthesized images of ID cards.

Users can verify an ID by scanning the other person's QR code via the PASS app or by presenting their own PASS ID QR code. The carriers noted that the PASS mobile ID utilizes security technologies such as capture prevention, dynamic images, and time limits to prevent forgery. The campaign also serves to inform the public that forging mobile identification is punishable under the Road Traffic Act.
